How I Feed
I feed my flock a diet of fermented feed. Sure it's more work, but the results go above and beyond and are totally worth the extra effort.
The fermentation of food has been used for centuries in various cultures. If you've ever taken a bite of cheese, or yoghurt; had a sip of wine or beer; tasted sauerkraut - you've eaten a fermented food.
The process of fermentation uses naturally occurring bacteria to assist by partially breaking down the food, whilst improving its enzyme matter and raising its levels of essential vitamins such as B, C and K. In addition to that, it makes food more digestible, and boosts the “usable” protein level by roughly 12 percent.
The other benefits to using fermented feed:
My egg viability for hatching has gone up, my early quitters have gone down - and healthy chicks all around! The feathering rate on chicks fed FF is much quicker than those fed a dry crumble.
You wouldn't believe how big of a hit the Fermented Feed is with my birds. They mob us for the stuff. It's like candy to them.
Sources for research:
I brood chicks with only Brinsea EcoGlows, Premier Heat Plates (fav) or Broody hens. I do not use heat lamps due to the potential dangers and the high energy consumption.
